at Grand Avenue Festival 2014
(Phoenix, AZ) Join Many Mouths, One Stomach; Grand Avenue Merchants Association; Strange Family Circus and PAPA, LLC as The Phoenix Annual Parade of the Arts celebrates its 9th public procession on November 8, 2014. As a family friendly, 100% participatory event, PAPA is a unique experience where the community is invited to walk together in a free celebration of artistic expression and downtown Phoenix. This year’s theme “Grand PAPA,” embraces a modern take on the legacies we’ve received from our past and is a nod to PAPA’s 2014 partnership with the Grand Avenue Festival. From forefathers and ancestral roots to steampunkers and hippies, participants are invited to dress and build floats in honor of family, figures from history or as homage to the Phoenix of yesteryear.
Members of the community do not have to register to march, however, participants who choose to enter the contests must check in by 5:00pm for judging. Winners in 5 categories: best float, best group, best bike, best costume and best “cute” (typically kids and pets) will receive prizes designed by local artists. Floats and participants must be non-motorized (bicycle, skateboards and other human powered vehicles are acceptable). PAPA takes pride in its “non motorized floats” policy to keep the parade ecologically friendly.
The public procession kicks off at 6:00pm. Lead by local Taiko group, Fushicho Daiko and local stilt walking dance troupe, Sky Kissers, the parade will travel southeastward on Grand Avenue. The procession will turn around in the intersection of Grand Ave, 7th Ave and Van Buren and will travel back up Grand Ave, returning to the starting point for the finale. As part of the Grand Avenue Festival, participants are encouraged to come early and stay late for all the day’s festivities. The PAPA headquarters on 15th /Grand/Roosevelt will host such events as The Untrashed Recycled Fashion Show, Spell dance troupe, Goblin Market by Fireland Phoenix Faerie Festival organizers, kids’ crafts during the day. Local artist Jason Alan Davis will provide set décor for the stage.
The Phoenix Annual Parade of the Arts unites the arts with the greater community by providing an open to the public, mobile expression of downtown Phoenix life. The free, family event is presented by the Production Agency for Participatory Arts, LLC. PAPA is a New Times Best of Phoenix winner.
